Social media today is today!Pun intended. is there ground rules for social media management then? If they are and they are believe me they aren’t that hard either. To avoid loosing credibility or passively looking to create a professional image for your brand, self, service or product let me share my two cents about it all.
Social media in general is a hub of information so most likely something that you read today was read by someone yesterday. One needs to learn how to filter this information. Retweeting and sharing everything that you read or find interesting will earn you the ‘mute’ button or ‘show less of’ clicked on your profile. Filtered posting on social networks will get you the desired positive attention.
Brands need to differentiate PR and cheap talk. Choose your conversations wisely. If there is something in for you indulge if not move on swiftly.
The silent golden rules
To the ‘mature’ in social media platforms. If you are what you say you are, why are you in the same platform as me! Not responding to a comment or liking someone’s retweet/share about your content is merely rude!
Give credit where is due. There are so many good thoughts out here that people have shared and not so many people have interacted with. Show some appreciation by saying where you got the inspiration. Don’t crop away designers signatures mmmhh!
LinkedIn – one of the most professional and powerful networks that most people haven’t yet figured out. Unlike twitter where retweet=retweet; endorsing people you’ve not met doesn’t guarantee endorsement in return. The endorsement aren’t real and you are just breaking the ice sooner or later you’ll be asking for something. So no don’t randomly endorse people.
Who doesn’t enjoy a good sales pitch, when interested! Spamming a prospects account with these pitches won’t help you seal the deal. As a matter of fact it will ruin your connection. Anytime they see your name they think what holiday is it again and roll their eyes.
The creators and curators to be …
To all the readers and philosophers out here. Unless you are very important please don’t share everything that you consume intellectually. It’s exhausting and frankly most people don’t care. However if you feel the urge to share, you can and should put your thoughts and reads in context that is relatable. Be professionally fun about it.
Most times as a result of pressure we might, I might misspell certain words. To avoid that I proof read. Proof reading is a scientific process that only geniuses are able to… hahaa I’m kidding you too can proof read before you hit the send button.
Let’s say you sent it already; for the sake of the brand go through your post. If you’re lucky to have an edit button good for you, if not I guess we back to square one. It’s never that serious nonetheless writing cum instead of come is just unbecuming okay! For any brand to achieve its goals on social media, content shared in platforms should be crisp. Despite the simplicity of the above mentioned, a brands’ reputation hugely relies on not making these errors. Unless of course you are in for leisure and not business… my bad.
