Pearls – The Irritate Gem

Why Pearls? Keep on reading. How Pearls Agency? Between my attachment and employment, I had a boutique. For about a year or so I enjoyed the pleasure of having extra income. On the contrary, I didn’t envision the business to be much other than an income generating avenue. I got fully into employment. With time I earned the trust of the organization and had a first class seat in running a fully-fledged business.

Despite it all, I was lucky to have a boss who had faith in me. Hence during my time as an employee, I initiated certain social media management initiatives. Not only did these initiatives help in brand marketing, but post customer care as well. The success of it all was evident to friends of the business who requested for his referral. Graciously he would ask me to set up meetings for these consults. With time he prompted a business registration idea. Pearls Agency become.

The Irritate Gem

Why Pearls Agency? To be honest back then I had no idea. Today however I do. For me to have come from a boutique owner, a social media manager consult, run a social media tip blog and now go beyond all limits to share my journey. I could say it was an irritate gem in making. Something had to be stirred in me all through this process. I had to be irritated!

Essentially there are three types of pearls: natural, cultured and imitation pearls.

Natural pearls form when an irritant – usually a parasite (not the proverbial grain of sand) works its way into an oyster, mussel, or clam. As its’ defense mechanism, a fluid is excreted, coating the irritant. The process usually continues throughout time resulting to a lustrous pearl. To be able to come up with the idea to go beyond all limits in my writing was a struggle. It wasn’t easy to align my concept, knowledge and passion. Often I would get frustrated due to the lack of alignment.

Cultured pearls undergo the same process. The only difference is an irritant is a surgically implanted. This can either be a bead or piece of shell called Mother of Pearl. These ‘seeds’ or ‘nuclei’ are most often formed from mussel shells. Quality cultured pearls require a sufficient amount of time. This could be at least 3years in order for a thick layer of nacre to be deposited, resulting in a beautiful, quality gem pearl. Lower-quality pearls, however have often been ‘rushed’ out of the oyster hence a too-thin coat of nacre. Can you imagine with all the passion and possible know how of social media management, administrative work and customer service I got fired from a position within 3months. Citing inability to perform required duties! 😥

Knowing The Investment

Pearls can come from either freshwater or saltwater sources. Historically, saltwater pearls are rounder and have a better nacre than freshwater pearls, while freshwater pearls tended to be very irregular in shape. Nevertheless, improvements in freshwater pearl farming techniques have narrowed that gap. Freshwater pearls now exhibit great roundness and deep luster. In a time the idea of having a website come in mind, it come from a fresh place. I was excited and happy about it. On the other hand it was very irregular. Thereafter the website got deleted and for a while the idea paused. Then I got into salty waters and I come up with a rainbow logo. The website was up again too. With improved techniques and findings from my journey my fresh water place got restored again. Now I have fresh and salty water in good measure.😎

The culturing process usually takes several years. Bivalves must reach a mature age, which can take up to 3 years. Only then can they be implanted or naturally receive an irritant. Once the irritant is in place, it can take up to another 3 years for the pearl to reach its full size and nacre thickness.  It is said that of all the pearls produced only approximately 5% are of sufficient true gem-quality for top jewelry makers. While this may be true a pearl farmer can spend over $100 for every oyster that is farmed, whether an irritate, gem-quality pearl is produced or not. During my “culturing” process I did invest in “mussesls” , “oyster” and “clam”. The first phase was a total loss. I stuck it out to the second, third and finally I got the irritate gem.😍

Knowing Me

Imitation pearls are a different story. In most cases, a glass bead is dipped into a solution made from fish scales. As a result of the thin coating it eventually wears off. Further more one can usually tell an imitation by rubbing it across the teeth: Fake pearls glide across teeth, while the layers of nacre on real pearls feel gritty. I have bought imitation pearls and it glide right through my teeth, figuratively speaking. The fish scales that were left behind irritated me to my core. I swore never to try and taste the difference: I look at the price tag 😅
